Impact of respiratory physiotherapy on asthma control: a narrative review
Keywords:
rehabilitation, exercises, breathing, strengthening, asthma attacksAbstract
Introduction: Physiotherapy is considered a non-pharmacological intervention in the treatment of asthma, with the aim of reducing respiratory discomfort and dyspnea, promoting bronchial hygiene, improving respiratory muscle mechanics and strength, and improving the quality of life of patients diagnosed with asthma. It is done through exercises to strengthen the respiratory muscles, physical exercise, and respiratory maneuvers, such as Thoracoabdominal Rebalancing (TAR). Objective: To identify articles in the literature that provide results on the impacts that respiratory physiotherapy has on asthma control. Methodology: Review of literature found in the Scielo, Pubmed, and Google Scholar databases. Results: The studies found demonstrated that respiratory physiotherapy can be effective as a complementary treatment for asthma. Physical exercises, respiratory techniques, and muscle strengthening help control symptoms and improve response to attacks. Adequate treatment prevents sedentary lifestyle and allows the safe practice of physical activities, promoting a better quality of life. Conclusion: Physiotherapy is an effective non-pharmacological treatment for asthma, reducing the frequency and intensity of attacks and improving patients' quality of life. The techniques used are non-invasive, such as breathing exercises. The research reinforces the need for further studies in this area to improve therapeutic results.
