Mental health of the informal caregivers of hospitalized children

The hospitalization process brings with it a set of feelings related to insecurity, fear of the future, anguish, and fragility. These dimensions can also be understood in the context of child hospitalization. The study aimed to report the internship experience at a pediatric hospital in Santa Catarina. This is a descriptive research with an exploratory nature and a qualitative approach, in which the experience report strategy was used. Twenty-one caregivers were assisted during the internship experience, of which nineteen were women, who were the main caregivers. They presented anxiety and fear of hospitalization, but it was identified that the work of the psychologist minimized these feelings through active listening and the support offered. At the end of this internship experience, in addition to understanding the mental health of informal caregivers, it is expected that the experience will contribute to mitigating the psychosocial risk factors of caregivers, in order to strengthen their support, listening, and self-care.
