The importance of psychosocial factors in the work context in the mental health of public security professionals
Keywords:

Studying the psychosocial factors that exist in the work context contributes to understanding the mental health of workers. Psychosocial factors are understood as the interactions between the work environment, the content of the work and the organizational conditions, capabilities, needs, culture and personal conditions outside of work. The objective of this study was to measure the effects of psychosocial factors in the work context on occupational stress. This research was quantitative, using two instruments: the Organizational Work Scale (EOT) of the Psychosocial Risk Assessment Protocol at Work (PROART) and the Occupational Stress Questionnaire (PSQop). A total of 645 public safety professionals (firefighters and police
officers) participated. The results indicate that safety professionals have a medium level of risk and stress due to the psychosocial factors present in the work context. It was identified that protective psychosocial factors, such as support from colleagues and management, for example, are potential stress minimizers. These interactions between the work context and the worker, when perceived by the individual as stressful, promote negative reactions and can exceed the person's ability to deal with them, and this characterizes occupational stress.
