Abstract

As a result of the state of Santa Catarina presenting great geological and pedological diversity, as well as the advanced agricultural and industrial development, a study was carried out in order to quantify the pH levels in the chemical and biological properties of the soils, influencing the growth of plants and in nutrient availability. Therefore, collections were carried out at a depth of up to 20 cm from nineteen soils in municipalities in the Santa Catarina mountains. After the collections, the pH was determined in aqueous medium and in saline medium of all soil samples with the aid of a pH meter. Accordingly, the results of pH values in water were higher than the values observed in KCl solution. This behavior is justified by the effect of the KCl solution on the samples, since the salt comes into contact with the soil sample, it induces the exchange of cations. Thus, the experiment reveals that the pH is a significant indicator in economic activities in the region, namely industry, extractivism and livestock.
